Generations of pioneers, ranchers and winemakers have
instilled this property with the spirit of historic
Sonoma County. In continuous operation as a
ranch since the mid-1800s, this Russian River Valley
landmark is home to two wine brands – Hop Kiln
and HK Generations – and to a nonpareil
tasting room that conveys the genuine feeling of
the region’s past.
Working as the ranch’s winemaker from 1984 to
2007, Steve Strobl developed the winery’s proprietary
blends: Thousand Flowers, Big Red and Rushin’ River
Red. He also produced vintages of award-winning
varietals such as Zinfandel and Chardonnay. With
the release of the 2004 Pinot Noir and 2005 Chardonnay,
he presented HK Generations, pioneering
a new era for the winery. HK Generations wines
are small production releases of grape varieties
that excel in our area. These wines will be
the focus of Hop Kiln’s new winemaker, Erich
Bradley.
In 2004 Westside Grapes LLC purchased the historic
ranch and committed its efforts to preserving the
picturesque property and revitalizing the estate
vineyards. Plans call for site-specific plantings
of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Grenache, Syrah, Petite
Sirah, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon Blanc on the ranch’s
248 acres. Hop Kiln fully intends to become
a leading force as a grower and producer of classic
wines in the Russian River Valley.
Considered one of America’s best examples of a
historic kiln still standing, the landmark hop kiln houses
the tasting room, a favorite of local residents and a
must-see for Sonoma County’s visitors. In
addition to sampling wines, guests may taste an inviting
array of fine quality food products, including many produced
by local artisans. For the pleasure of customers,
Hop Kiln offers two scenic picnic areas – in the
fig garden and along the banks of the duck pond.
